Critical Diffuse Scattering Due to the Cooperative Jahn-Teller Phase Transition

In order to elucidate the properties of the cooperative Jahn-Teller effect, thediffuse scattering above the transition temperature has been studied both theoreti-cally and experimentally. The correlations between the triply axad the doublydegenerate electronic states interacting with each other via lattice vibrations arediscussed on the basis of the static Jahn-Teller effect. Satisfactory explanationsare given for both the X-ray experiments on NiCr.0. made by Terauchi et al. andour neutron experiments on FezTi0,( where Ni" and Fe" i n the tetrahedral siteshave electronic ground orbitals of triplet atad doublet respectively. The role ofvibrational optic modes in the electronic interaction and the applicability of thestatic Jahn-Teller effect are discussed.
