Zero Sound Anomaly in a Ferromagnetic Invar Alloy Fe_<65>Ni_<35>

The phonon dispersion of a single crystal of ferromagnetic Invar alloy, Fe.,Ni..has been measured along the high symmetry directions at several temperatures inthe small momentum region, q<0.35A ", by the inelastic neutron scattering.Marked softening of the [ll0]7'. and [11147' acoustic modes is found below theCurie temperature, T.=499-3-2 K. On the contrary, temperature dependentcharacter of the longitudinal modes is quite normal such that their elastic constantsincrease upon cooling. These results present a striking contrast to the ultrasonicresults, which show the anomalous depression for [11041 mode near T..Zero sotmd anomaly of the transverse mode in the Fe..Ni.. alloy is wellinterpreted by the coupling of the transverse phonons and the electrons of the3d band. The specific relation between the elastic softening and the Invar propertiesis discussed.
