Magnetic Phase Transition of MnP Under Magnetic Field

Neutron diffractiota studies on the magnetic phase transition have been carriedout by using single crystal of MnP. Successive phase transitions from screw, fanand ferromagnetic lotag range order were confirmed by applying magnetic fieldalong the crystalline b axis. The magnetization measurements which give a satura-tion value of 1.33f.O1 p. per Mn atom afford experimental derivation of theabsolute cross section for. all the magnetic reflectic>ns. This provides us the exactvalue of the magnetic moment in every phase at 4.2 K. The controversy is elim-inated completely; there is no change of the magnetic moment tlu'ough the screw-fan transition, arad the circular helix is concluded. The quantitative agreement ofthe present results is achieved with Kitano-Nagamiya theory in the fan state. Thefield dependence of the wave vector Q," of the fan state implies an additiouaalevidence of the band character inherent in MnP.
