Absorption and Dispersion Studies of the 4_s4_p ^3P-4p^2^3P Multiplet of Zn.I

• The 4s4p 'P levels of Zn have been populated by a DC discharge and tlu'eeseries of measurements have been applied to observe the 4s4p 'PAp" 'P rnul-tiplet at about ,112100 A. These are (l) precise measurement of the absorptionprofile for the 'P.-'P. autoionizing transition, (2) total-absorption measurementfor the same transition with simultaneous dispersion (hook) measurement forthe 4s4p 'P.-Ashs '.5. transition at 24722 A, and (3) simultaneous hook meas-urements for the 'P-'P multiplet concerned and the 4s4p'PAs5s'S visiblemultiplet. The autoionization rate of the 4p" P. level is 4.72 x 10" s " from(1). From (2) and (3) the gf values are 0.76, 0.68, 0.68 and 0.97 for 'P.-'P.,'P.-'P., 'P.-'P. and 'P.-'P., respectively, by reference to the absolute f values( -0.14) for the visible multiplet.
