Formation of He_2 Molecules in the Early Afterglow of He Pulsed Discharge

Time-resolved spectroscopy on pulsed He discharge has given experimental evidnce for He_2 formation by three-body conversion in the early afterglow. The discharge of 20-200 A peakcurrent was made at 10 Torr in a capillary of 8 mm I.d. The electoron density of the order 10^<14>m^<-3> was determined by the Inglis-Teller relation, and the electron temperature of about 3000 K was measured by the intensity-ratio of He line-pair from leves in LET. The teemporal behaviors of He_2 VUV- and visible-emissions were interpreted by collisional-radiative processes. On the basis of a model describing ionic species in the early afterglow the temporal variation of the density-ratio of He_2^+to He^+ was deduced and compared with the intensity-ratio of He_2 and He emissions from levels in LET. The result leasd to the rate 1.3×10^<4>s^<-1> for the three-body conversion at 10 Torr, which is in good agreement with the value obtained by Beaty et al.
