Potential Curves of 1_u States of Rare Gas Dimers Derived from VUV Emission Continua

The osciI[atory structures of vuv emission continua originating from the lowestexcited states l.('P.) have been observed for Ne., Ar. and Kr, in the glowdischarges with currents of the order of 7?A at pressures of a few Torr. Fromthese structures the rotential curves of the l.('P2) states have been calculated forNe. and Ar, in the region of internuclear distances up to near the well minimumby making use of the method by Smith based on the WKB stationary phaseapproximation. Although the present calculation depends on the assumed groundstate potential curves, ithas been found that Cohen's calcu1ation.of the Ne, l.('P.)potential falls far from our results, but Saxon's calculation of the Ar. l.('P.)potential is in good agreement with our results.
