Collision-Induced Dipole Transitions Associated with High-Lying States. : I. Absorption Studies of Barium in Rare Gases

• Absorption method has been applied to observe the collision-induced dipoletransitions associated with the optically forbidden transitions 6s" 'S.-6p" "7)2,-6s9d"D., -6s1Od-"D., and -5dSp "D. of barium in argon, krypton or xenonatmosphere. The effective oscillator strength per unit rare-gas deuasity is obtainedto be, e.g., for 6s'.-6s9d, 3.6x10-", 2.0X107", and 5.8><10-" cm' for argort,krypton, and xenon, respectively. A correlation is found between the effectiveoscillator stre'ngth and the scattering length of the rare-gas atoms for electrons.This is explained from a model in which an adjacent P state mixes into the D statedue to the interaction potential between the loosely-bound valence electron andthe rare-gas atom.
