Free Z_3 Exciton Luminescence Spectra of Vapor-deposited CuCl Films(Condensed Matter : Electronic Structure, Electrical, Magnetic and Optical Properties)

We have vapor-deposited CuCl films on rutile TiO_2, Al_2O_3 and synthesized quartz surfaces. The photoluminescence spectra of the films with the thickness from 50 to 1500nm were observed and compared with that of bulk CuCl. The energy position of the free Z_3 exciton luminescence was found to shift to lower energy side with the increase in the film thickness. This phenomenon suggested that the Z_3 exciton polaritons could not relax to the bottleneck region during their lifetime in the thin films. The observed substrate dependence of the spectra suggested that the relaxation was determined by the film thickness rather than the substrates we used in the experiment.
