A calculation of the quasi-steady-state solution for a purely-ionizing hydrogenplasma shows that each excited level goes through three phases with an increasein electron density, n. : i.e., the corona phase for low n., the quasi-saturation phasefor intermediate n. and the complete-saturation phase for high n.. In the latter twophases the ladder-like excitation mechanism gives the population density distribu-Lion nC tt )/t(t? )cxr -' (war )/czar ) is the rorulation densitv r>er unit statistical weishtof the level with the principal quantum number p). For this class of plasmaGriem's LTE criterion gives the boundaries between these phases instead of LTE.In the ionization mechanism the ladder-like excitation-ionization process becomesimportant when the low-lying excited levels enter into the saturation phase, andits contribution amounts to 50Z of the total ionization rate for high n.. Anexperiment supports these conclusions.
