Collision-Induced Dipole Transition Due to Long-Range Interaction in Calcium-Xenon System

For calcium in high-density xenon (<5 X 10" cm-') a collision-induced dipole(CID) transition 4s"-4s3d' arising from the successive application of thequadrupole-dipole interaction auad the radiative perturbation has been observedby absorption technique. .As for the 4s"-4s3d electric-quadrupole transition ofcalcium the absorption oscillator strength and the collisional half width per unitxenon density have been determined to be 7.8x10-' and 2.1x10 "cm's='respectively. Theoretical calculation by the use of these values gives the absorptioncoefficient for the CD transition in reasonable agreement with the observation.
