Secondary Emission in NaNO_2 under Selective Excitation:Dispersion and Relaxation of ν_<00> Exciton

Spectral and transient behavior of secondary emission in NaN0. has been studiedunder the selective excitation with frequency v, in the region of the phonon sidebandof the zero-phonon line at v.. in the absorption spec:trum. The emission line becomesbroader and stronger as v, shifts from v.. toward higher energy, and it splits into twoor more compor(ents when v, falls into valley regions of the phonon sideband. Themaximum separation of the split components amounts to about 5 cm '. The decaytime of the emission is almost constant and about 7 ns for the change in v,. Theseresults suggest that v.. excitons are created in some limited regions of the exciton bandin the Brillouin zone by the phonon-assisted optical transition, and that radiative an-nihilation of the exciton occurs before thermalization of the exciton is established.
