Low Energy Phonon Side Bands of UV Absorption in NaNO_2

New phonon side bands have been found on the lower energy side of the zero-phonon line of ^1A_1⇾^1B_1 absorption in NaNO_2. The absorption intensities of the side bands increase exponentially with temperature. They are interpreted as the hot bands which correspond to the exciton creation and phonon annihilation processes. The profile of the hot band of each polarization is discussed in comparison with that of the phonon side band on the higher energy side of the zero-phonon line. The observed profiles of the E&pars;a and E&pars;c hot bands agree with those calculated from the profiles of the higher energy side bands by taking account of the thermal population of phonons. The observed profile of the E&pars;b hot band is quite different from the calculated one. The difference is interpreted in terms of the exciton-phonon bound state.
