A sample of alkali halide crystal with a thin layer of high-concentration O':; centers has beenprepared by infiltration of K02 or N2L202 melt into a crack which is artificially introduced in ahost crystal. A thin layer of O; centers is formed by simultaneous diffusion of O':; moleculesinto the host crystal through the crack interfaces. Concentration of the O; centers in thelayer amounts to " 2 X 10" cm ', about 10 times higher than that in ordinary samples grownby the Kyropoulos method. As-prepared thin layers have been found to show luminescencespectra characteristic of the O; center, though zero-phonon lines of the spectra show largeinhomogeneous broadening and their phonon sidebands are deformed markedly. Upon annealing, the width of inhomogeneous broadening is reduced and the spectra approach those of ordinarysamples. It has been found that annealed samples show superfluorescence.
