Optical Study of the Triplet State in NaNO_2 Crystals : Excitonic Aspects of Phosphorescence Spectra

The triplet absorption and phosphorescence spectra of NaNO_2 crystals have been studied in the temperature range of 1.8〜40K. Intensity distribution of vibronic lines of the absorption is well described by the Franck-Condon factors, while that of the phosphorescence shows poor agreement with the factors. The intensity of the ν_<00> line of the phosphorescence is about 1/10 of that expected from the factors. The profile of the phonon sideband of the ν_<00> line in the phosphorescence is not exactly a mirror image of that in the absorption with respect to the ν_<00> line at 2K. The former approaches the latter around 30K. Ratio of the integrated intensity of the ν_<00> line to that of the one-phonon sideband is 0.52 for the absorption and 0.19 for the phosphorescence at 2K. The ratio for the phosphorescence becomes close to that for the absorption at 30K. These facts are interpreted in terms of an exciton picture.
