Comparative electrocardiographic studies on two strains, WKY and Wistar ST, were made with ordinary limb leads and with the body surface mapping. With a recording system with sufficiently high frequency characteristics from d. c. up to 10kHz, observed a twin-shaped P wave, notches at the up-rising slope of the QRS and at the bottom of the S wave, and asymmetrical T wave were observed. The amplitude variation in ECG associated with the respiratory movement was large enough even to produce the cyclic direction changes in the electrical axis. The surface profile of the cardiac e. m. f. was similar to that of man in general, though these observed showed a wide variety between specimens. This difference is estimated to be far larger than that between rat strains. These results were discussed with the possibility to find an earlier minimal pathological change in a disease model rat, SHR.
