By successive selective brother-sister breeding of crossbred hybrid male TC-C and female TC, both developed by crossing severely hypertensive rats (M-SHRSP) with spontaneously hypercholesterolemic rats (SHC), a colony of hypertensive, hypercholesterolemic rats (Hyper T-C rats) was obtained and an inbred strain established. Males of this new strain show blood pressures of around 230 mmHg and plasma total cholesterol levels of 400-500 mg/dl at 20 weeks of age. Females show blood pressures of around 230 mmHg and plasma total cholesterol levels of 500 mg/dl at 25 weeks of age. The incidence of cerebral stroke lesions in generation F_<16>-F_<20> was 47% for males and 57% for females. Life spans were 151 days and 186 days, respectively. Vascular changes such as angionecrosis and/or hyaline degeneration in these Hyper T-C rats develop in the brain and kidneys after blood pressures have continued to be above 220 mmHg for about 2 weeks and in the heart, thyroid gland, adrenal glands, and testes after such levels have been maintained for an additional 1 to 2 weeks.
