Using SHRSP, the effects of oxprenolol were examined. The following results were obtained : 1) Although SHRSP blood pressure was not influenced by long-term administration of oxprenolol, survival was remarkably elongated and stroke incidence noticeably lowered. 2) The secretion of renin into peripheral blood was suppressed but renal renin activity levels were similar to those of the control group. 3) Aorta elastin content, not only Partridge but Lansing elastin as well, was higher in the experimental groups than it was in the controls. 4) Morphologically, hypertensive arterial changes in the experimental groups were slightly less than those of the controls. Newly synthesized elastin was found in some of the experimental group rat arteries also. These results suggest that oxprenolol is effective in preventing hypertensive vascular diseases.
