In spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHR), stroke-prone SHR (SHRSP) and malignant SHRSP (M-SHRSP), the changes in plasma renin concentration (PRC) and renal renin concentration (RRC) due to the development of hypertension, as well as the effects of antihypertensive treatment upon renin activity, were studied and have been discussed in relation to hypertension. PRC values for SHR C (blood pressures below 200 mmHg) and for SHR B_2 (blood pressures below 220 mmHg) did not exceed the normal values found for the control WKY (Wistar-Kyoto rats). There were extraordinary increases in PRC for both SHRSP and M-SHRSP (blood pressures above 250 mmHg) and PRC levels were positively correlated with blood pressure; however PRC values remained normal even for these strains as long as their blood pressures remained below 210 mmHg. There was also a positive correlation between PRC and RRC in M-SHRSP. There was some reduction in blood pressure when saralasin or captopril was administered to SHRSP and M-SHRSP. Blood pressures fell following the administration of captopril or hydralazine hydrochloride and then rose steeply upon termination of the treatment. However, PRC increased a little more slowly. These results suggest that the increase in PRC found in SHRSP and M-SHRSP with high blood pressure levels is a result of this extraordinary rise in blood pressure (above 210 mmHg); while, in turn, the increased PRC further aggravates the hypertension.
