Crossbred offspring, developed by breeding two unlike strains of rats : M-SHRSP, i.e., malignant or precocious SHRSP, (early and severely hypertensive) and SHC, i.e., spontaneously hypercholesterolemic rats (normotensive), were backcrossed with M-SHRSP or SHC. Eight separate, crossed inbred strains were established through repeated backcrossings. The blood pressures of each of these substrains were intermediate to those of their respective, original parents while the blood pressures of the offspring obtained through brother-sister breeding within each substrain were nearly identical to those of their immediate parents. The results of our findings on plasma total cholesterol levels were similar. Using these crossbred offspring in an histopathological examination of the relationships between blood pressures and vascular changes (angionecrosis and hyaline degeneration) has revealed that these vascular changes start to appear in the brain, kidneys, and testes at about the same time that blood pressures begin to exceed 220 mmHg. It has also revealed that similar vascular changes begin to develop in the heart and thyroid glands from 1 to 2 weeks after blood pressures have first gone over 220 mmHg. These results are similar to those previously observed for homogenetically crossbred M-SHRSP and Wistar-Kyoto rats (WKY) offspring.
