To estimate the effect in the ventilation in the amphibian skin, phosphorus metabolites dynamics, and intracellular pH (pHi) were studied in isolated frog skin with ^<31>P nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) analysis. Anaerobic perfusion of the epidermal side of the skin produced a fall in phosphocreatine (PCr) concentration and increases in those of inorganic phosphate (Pi) and suger phoshates (SP) in the serosal side of the skin. These changes were accompanied by an intracellular acidosis. The application of ventilation after anaerobic perfusion to the epidermal side of the skin accelerated the rate of the recovery process. Ventilation in the skin is considered to be an ecological role of the skin, and facilitates the gas exchange necessary for energy generation during the anaerobic state.
