The authors examined the modulations of somatic sensation in the lower limbs after prolonged sitting on the knees which was tested with the electrical stimulation. Somatic sensation was measured at five different areas ; the lateral and medial aspects of the lower legs, and the lateral, medial and anterior thighs. The sensory threshold to electric stimulation increased by about 1.7 times that of the control as the straight sitting was continued. The sensory threshold of the thigh did not increase markedly. The biggest increase of the perception threshold in the electrical threshold was observed at the lateral aspect of the lower legs. The electric stimulation method, which allows quantitative and serial measurements, was convenient for evaluation of monotonously changing dysesthesia of the lower limbs caused by prolonged sitting on the knees.
