Using ^1H-nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), we studied the state of the in vivo water to establish the correlation between the degree of starvation and the spin-lattice (T_1) or spin-spin relaxation time (T_2) of water protons in muscles of the frog (Rana catesbeiana). Water content of the body weight increased as the period of starvation progressed, and the T_1 value aslo increased proportionally to the water content in the frog muscle. The increase in the T_2 value was comparable with the T_1 value in the same stages. T_1 was dependent on the water content of the muscle. T_2 was an indication of the degree of interaction of biopolymers within the cells under starvation.
