For the detailed comparison of the rat ECG and of the isopotential contour map, an attempt to average the successive ECG patterns was introduced. The averaging of the ECG pattern yielded the reduction of the noise of the base line and eased the comparison. The shift rate which was derived from the time-dependent gradient of each ECG pattern was recorded on the thorax according to the grid method. The distribution of the shift rate revealed the movement of the electric dipole of the heart clearer than that of the isopotential contour map. The shift rate distribution was discussed in relation to the direction of the cardiac electromotive force.
