Afferent discharges were recorded from frog muscle spindles to ramp-and-hold stretch during starvation, and changes in discharge frequency to the ramp and to the steady stretch phases were compared. Starvation of frog (Rana catesbeiana) showed that the sartorius muscle was associated with the decrease in neuronal activity. Decreases were nearly 15% over two months starvation and slightly over 75% at five months starvation. Rate of decreases in spontaneous discharges was in parallel with the loss of the body weight. Afferent activity is expected to relate to nutritional status. As starvation progressed, the discharge frequency decreased in both phases. The decrease discharge rate to phasic rate was larger than that tonic phase during starvation. The effects of extended starvation on afferent neural activitier was observed.
