Hepatoprotective Effects of Oleanene Glucuronides in Several Edible Beans

We examined the hepatoprotective effects of oleanene glucuronides (OGs) prepared from some Japanese edible beans. Total OGs from soybean (seeds of Glycine max), adzuki bean (seeds of Vigna angularis), kidney bean (seeds of Phaseolus vulgaris) and scarlet runner bean (seeds of Phaseolus coccineus) showed a hepatoprotective action at 500 μg/ml. The order of potency was adzuki bean OG ≥ kidney bean OG ≥ soybean OG ≫ scarlet runner bean OG. Purified OGs obtained from these beans also showed hepatoprotective actions at 500 μM. The order of potency was soyasaponin I > soyasaponin V > azukisaponin VI > phaseoside I. The difference in the potency of total OG of each bean seemed to reflect the composition of pure OG.
