Clinical Studies on Patients with Systemic Lupus Erythematosus Associated with Sjogren's Syndrome

Clinical features of patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) associated with Sjogren's syndrome (SjS) were investigated in comparison with those with SLE alone or SjS alone. Ten (42%) of twenty-four patients with SLE were associated with SjS. These ten patients (SLE c^^- SjS) were studied clinically, sialographically and histopathologically, compared with 14 patients without SjS and an additional 22 patients with SjS alone. The onset of symptoms in patients with SLE c^^- SjS and SLE alone was earlier than that in patients with SjS alone. The frequency of various clinical symptoms in patients with SjS alone was significantly different from that in patients with SLE c^^- SjS and SLE alone, although a close resemblance in the spectrum of symptoms was suggested among these three groups of patients. No statistically significant differences in clinical symptoms were observed between those with SLE c^^- SjS and SLE alone, except for sicca features. Histopathological and sialographical studies on the sublingual or parotid glands demonstrated relatively more severe abnormalities in patients with SLE c^^- SjS than in those with SjS alone. The function of the salivary glands in patients with SLE c^^- SjS, however, was preserved to a considerable degree. Hematological and serological abnormalities were demonstrated more frequently in patients with SLE alone and SLE c^^- SjS than in thosewith SjS alone. It is concluded that SjS is associated with the benign chronic form of SLE. Such association in patients is compatible with that in New Zealand mice which are presumed to be an animal model of SLE. It is assumed that SLE and SjS share the same etiological agents in humans.
