In comparison with healthy lymphocytes, the helper/suppressor effects of SLE lymphocytes in vitro were observed with PFC of mouse spleen cells cultured with Con A-induced factor. From this study, it was found that the factor which promotes PFC production remained in SLE lymphocytes, while the factor which suppresses it was weakened in SLE lymphocytes. By counting the absolute numbers of T cells, T γ cells and T μ cells in circulating lymphocytes, it became clear that the helper effect in SLE lymphocytes corresponded to the reduction of circulating T cells, especially T γ cells. Since the number of T μ cells in SLE is kept at the same level as healthy lymphocytes, this indicates that T γ cells are identical to suppressor T cells.
