Adsorption of Oxygen on Electron-Bombarded CaF_2(111) Surfaces

The effect of oxygen adsorption was investigated on both stoichiometric and damaged CaF_2(111) surfaces. Oxygen is hardly adsorbed on a stoichiometric surface, while it is easily adsorbed on electron-bombarded surfaces. For the lightly bombarded CaF_2(111) surface, oxygen occupied the fluorine vacant site. However, oxygen reacted with Ca atoms aggregated on the heavily damaged CaF_2(111) surface and CaO formation was observed.
