Dewatered sewage sludge cake was composted in an autothermal packed bed reactor (APBR), in which the temperature of compositng material was maintained by the heat of reaction. The temperature level was controlled by regulating the flow rate of air supplied to the reactor. The composting reaction rate was monitored by the CO_2 evoluton rate. Sludges containing lime and polymer coagulants gave characteristically different CO_2 evolution patterns. The optimal temperatuer for the composting of both sludges was around 60℃, which was the same as that observed previously for the lime sludge in the continuously mixed isothermal reactor (CMIR). A difference in the reaction rate between the APBR and the CMIR was clear at the initial stage of the reaction but became smaller as the reaction proceeded. The effect of bulking agents on the reaction rate was also investigated, and bulky agents providing a large area of contact between compost solid and air were found to promote the reaction.
