Rate of Composting of Dewatered Sewage Sludge in Continuously Mixed Isothermal Reactor

Dewatered sewage sludge was composted in an isothermal composting reactor of which the temperature was controlled with an external heater. Rice husks and crushed rice husks were mixed with the sludge as bulking agents. The progress of the reaction was monitored by the measurement of CO_2 evolution rate. By assuming that the main substrate for the microbial degradation was the volatile matter (VM) in the raw sludge, the composting progress was expressed in terms of the conversion of carbon in the raw sludge, x_<sc>, and CO_2 evolution rate was correlated with x_<sc>. The optimum temperature was around 60℃ and the opimum moisture content was 50% in the region of lower conversion of VM and 40-65% in the higher conversion region.
