Removal of Hydrogen Sulfide by a Biofilter with Fibrous Peat

A packed bed of fibrous peat was used as a deodorizing material to remove H_2S from air in a laboratory-scale column. When the loading of H_2S was less than 0.44 g H_2S-S per day per kg-dry peat, H_2S was almost completely removed irrespective of its inlet concentration. At higher loading, the capacity for H_2S removal gradually increased, and after an acclimation period of about 15 days, steady and efficient removal of H_2S was attained. The efficient removal was mostly due to biological oxidation by indigenous microorganisms in the peat. This was verified by use of gamma-ray irradiated peat, which did not effectively remove of H_2S. The removal rate of H_2S by the acclimatized peat under a constant concentration of H_2S in feed air was constant irrespective of the H_2S loading, but the reaction rate constant was proportional to the influent concentration of H_2S.
