Thermal balance analysis of composting of sewage sludge cakes was conducted for a laboratory-scale batch operated autothermal packed bed reactor and a continuously operated commercial open-bin reactor with a scoop mixer, and necessary equations were developed. Substitution of experimentally determined reaction rates into them confirmed the validitiy of these equations. The relative importance of each term relating to heat removal from the reactors was quantitatively evaluated. In the commercial reactor, heat removal was mainly due to water vaporization from composting material, while in the laboratory reactor heat loss from the reactor wall was the largest. In the laboratory reactor, the amount of evaporation was largest when the air flow rate was controlled to maintain temperature in the reactor to maximize the reaction rate.
