Biological Deodorization Using Activated Carbon Fabric as a Carrier of Microorganisms

The biological deodorization of methyl mercaptant was studied using an activated carbon fabric as a new carrier of microorganisms. The activated carbon fabric seeded with digested night soil was the best packing material compared with four other materials. The critical load of methyl mercaptan, in which the gas can be completely removed, was determined as 0.48g-S/kg-activated carbon fabric/d. The Michaelis-Menten equation was applied and the two constants were obtained as V_m=0.69g-S/kg-activated carbon fabric/d and K_s=7.7 ppm. About 80% of methyl mercaptan removed in the biofilter was converted into the sulfate ion.
