Mass Transfer in the Liquid Phase with Tubular Waste-water Treatment Contactor

The consumption rates of glucose in artificial waste-water with the microbial film attached to the inner surfaces of supporters, which were modelled on the tubular-type contactor, were observed. When the laminar liquid flow developed in the supporters, under the present experimental conditions, the mass tranfer rate of glucose or dissolved oxygen from the liquid bulk to the microbial film surface was controlling the rate of the reaction. The experimental data coincided rather well with the predicted values calculated on the assumption that the mass tranfer controlled the reaction. It was also shown experimentally that when the laminar flow development was interrupted the rate controlling step would move to the inner layer of the microbial film.
