The reaction in the microbial film on the rotating biological contactor was simulated by a mathematical model. The effect of the rotation speed of the biodisc on the time-average biochemical reaction rate was quantitatively analyzed and expressed by a rotation factor. The empirical form of the rotation factor φ_N was expressed as a function of the rotation speed of biodisc N by φ_N=(N^<0.61>)/(N^<0.61>+ε)where ε is an empirical constant. It was also ascertained that this empirical form of the rotation factor could be applied to experimental data of glucose oxidation rate obtained in a laboratory-scale apparatus.
