Procedures to predict the utilization of oxygen in completely segregated fine gas bubbles, sparged into liquid, are presented and discussed. In such a system the change in mole fraction of oxygen and thus the change in volume of the bubbles with retention time cannot be ignored, so that the quantitative analysis becomes complicated.Methods of determining the mass transfer coefficient from the experimental data in the fine bubbles system are also discussed. It is noted that besides the unsteady state method, commonly used in the previous works, the steady state method, in which the oxygen utilization of the exhaust gas is measured, can be recommended for application in practical operations.
