Water extracts from a mixture of sewage sludge, rice husk and crushed rice husk, the raw material, and from its composted product from a laboratory-scale composting apparatus were fractionated with Sephadex G-15 gel, monitored by UV absorbance. An ammonium hydroxide aqueous solution was found to be a suitable eluent. The fractions obtained were analyzed for their total organic carbon (TOC) content, and peptide, amino acid, polysaccharide, and low fatty acid concentrations. The molecular weight distribution of the measured compounds showed a distinctive difference between the raw material and its product. The amount of amino acids and low fatty acids decreased significantly as a result of the composting degradation. In the product extract, while peptides and polysaccharides of relatively low molecular weights decreased considerably, their relatively high molecular weight compounds in creased.
