The liquid mixing in the liquid flow direction of practical aeration tanks of domestic wastewater treatment plants was quantitatively investigated. From the experimentally obtained data with a tracer method, longitudinal dispersion coefficients in each stage between partition walls and backflow rates through partition wall between stages in the aeration tank were determined. They were correlated with the spiral liquid circulation rate measured at water surface, in view of the fact that the spiral liquid circulation caused by fed air primarily governs the liquid mixing in the tank. The correlation factors were expressed empirically as functions of tank configurations and aeration condtions. The extent of liquid mixing in the aeration tank of domestic wastewater treatment with partition walls was tried to be expressed by single measures, such as the overall Peclet number and equivalent number of tanks, under practical operating conditions.
