Spin-Polarization and Differential Cross Section of Electron-Mercury Inelastic Scattering

The electron impact excitation of the 6'P state of mercttry is treated by thedistorted wave Born approximation. The cross section and spin polarization arecalculated at the impact energies between 50 and 500 eV. For each impact energythe calculations are performe<l for the two types of form factors F. and F., F.being estimated using the Coulomb approximated atomic wave functions andF. estimated using the bound state eigenfunction of the Hartree-field. Thecomparison with experiments shows that in the profiles of the cross section andspin polarization, F.. is superior to F(, but in the absolute values of the crosssection F. is superior to F.. At the incident energy higher than 300 eV and thescattering angle less than 90', the profiles of the spin polarization of the inelas-tically scattered electrons show the drastic departure from that of the elasticallyscattered ones.
