Extended Appearance-Potential Fine-Structure Analysis of Fe(110) Surface

In order to study the surface structure of a material, a method for detecting theextended appearance-potential fine-structure has been developed by measuring thepeak-to-peak height of a particular Auger signal. Since Auger electron spec-troscopy is highly sensitive to surface elements, the detection method is consideredto be very useful to study atomic surface structures. The Fourier transformof the detected extended appearance-potential line-structure curve of Fe(110)surface has exhibited a prominent peak at 2.47 A, which is about 0.01 A lessthan the nearest-neighbor bulk spacing in iron.
