A Statistical Theory of Nucleation and Growth in Finite Systems

The Kolmogorov-Avrami-type formulation for both the latent xtucleation (in-homogeneous) and the random nucleation (homogeneous) cases is presented for finitesystems. In finite systems, there appear three time regimes. For the latent nucleus casethe fraction of transformed regions remains as 1 -e "' (V: densityz of nuclei, F:system volume) and for the random nucleation case it apjcroaches ux?ity in the timedependence as 1 -Ae "' (.4 : constant, J : nucleation rate). The growth rate in finitesystems is always smaller than that 111 infinite systems. We present the numericalresults of one-dimensional system as an example.nucleation, growth, Kolmogorov-A,vrami model, finite systems
