On the First Order Phase Transition in Ammonium Rochelle Salt

The first order phase transition observed in ammonium Rochelle salt, inducedby the X irreducible representation of the space group P2.2.2 from which theLifshitz invariant can be constructed, is discussed on the basis of a simple modelthermodynamic potential. It is shown that some constraints should be imposedon magnitude of the model parameters for the first order transition into a com-mensurate phase to overcome the second order transition into an incommensuratephase when the Lifshitz invariant exists.
