Group-Theoretical Analyses of the Structural Phase Transitions in Lead-Orthovanadate Pb_3(VO_4)_2 Crystal

Successive phase transitions in lead-orthovanadate Pb.(VO.). are group-theoretically analyzed. The trigonaJ-to-monocJinic (nonpolar) transition isconsidered to be induced by an irreducible representation at the F point of theprototypic trigonal phase. The polar monoclinic phase is induced by simultaneouscondensation of two representations at two different points both on the Brillouinzone boundary of the nonpolar monoclinic phase, which are located inside theBriJ]ouin zone of the trigonal lattice. The reasons why the monoclinic (nonpolar)-to-monoclinic (polar) transition in Pb3(VO.). is not of the sec:ond order arepointed out.
