Luminescence and optical absorption associated with relaxed excitons in pure Rblhave been studied by means of time-resolved spectroscopy. It is found that the emis-sion band near 3.0 eV consists of an intrinsic component and an extrinsic componentarising from Br- impurities. The intrinsic component, characterized by the samedecay time as that of the n luminescence, exhibits an emission band peaking at 3.07eV. The results indicate the presence of three intrinsic emission bands in Rbl, the3.07 eV, n and o bands. The optical absorption originating from the initial states forthe 3.07-eV and n luminescence is compared with the corresponding absorption inother alkali halides by means of the Mollwo-Ivey relation. It is shown that the absorp-lion bands from the initial state of the n luminescence in alkali halides, except NaBrand Nal, can be categorized into two groups: one includes that for the 3.07-eVluminescence and the other that for the n luminescence.[self-trapped exciton, alkali halides, Rbl, lattice relaxation, strong electron-Rat- lI lice interactionl
