The electronic structure and intersystem crossing at excited states of the relaxedexciton, ( V?e )7g, perturbed by monovalent cation impurity in KCI and KBr have beenstudied by pulsed laser irradiation of samples populated with the lowest triplet ( V?e )).It is found that the cr-polarized luminescence, at 3.03 eV and 2.93 eV in KCI:Na andKBr:Na, respectively, that decays in less than 10 ns is produced upon the photo-excitation of the lowest triplet (V?e),g. The fast luminescence is ascribed to thefluorescence (referred to as .5.-luminescence) from the lowest singlet (V?e)). The degreeof polarization of the optical absorption due to the lowest triplet (V?e ),j is determinedand it is shown that the electron orbitals of ( V?e ),g are in the order of b.., b.., b.. and b:.from lower energy. The ,5. luminescence is found to be produced most efficiently by theelectron excitation from the a. orbital to the b:. orbital.
