Measurements have been made of the dichroic changes, induced by polarizedlaser-light irradiation, of the specimens populated with the self-trappe<1 excitonsin the m-luminescence and in the optical absorption due to the lowest self-trappedexcitons in NaC], KCI and RbCI. The degree of polarization was deterrrxined as afunction of the photon energy of the Baser light and was analyzed by taking itinto account that the electron transitions from the lowest a., orbital to the b..,b.. and b3. orbitals overlap each other. The peak positions and the half widths ofeach transition were determined, and it is shown that the electron orbi:Eats of theself-trar>r>ed excitons are in the order of 62., bs., bx. and bX. from lower enerxv. It is also pointed out that the width of the band due to the transition to the b..orbital is nearly the same or even larger than that to the b3. orbital. Th?ese resultsare compared with the optical absorption of the F3 center. The implication of theresults on the mechanism of the Frenkel-pair formation is also discussc:d.
