Isotope Effects on Optical Absorption Spectra of Hydronaphthyl Radicals in Naphthalene Single Crystals

Highly resolved absorption spectroscopy has been made for the hydronaphthylradical-h. in a Cj.Hg crystal and the hydrona)chthyl radical-d, in a C..D.crystal. The isotope shift of the 0-0 vibrational line of the 1-hydronapthyl radicalwas obtained to be 97 cm -". The isotope shift of the phonon frequencies derivedfrom the singularities of the sideband is in accorclance with the isotope shift ofthe Raman frequencies of a naphthalene crystal. The shift of the vibrationalfrequencies is found to be near'ly the same as that observed irv the emission spec-trum by Jacobsen et at. The spectral shift and the intensity change of the absorp-tion lines, which have been assigned previously to charge transfer transitions,are explained in terms of the change in the zero-point energies and of the intensityborrowing of the charge trauasfer transition from the intra-guest transition,respectively.
