Luminescence of Free and Self-Trapped Excitons in α- and β-Perylene Crystals

Luminescence spectra and decaytimcs have been measured over a wide torn-perature range. Thermal equilibt"itxm population between free and selt'-trappedexcitons has been confirmed in both dimeric (a) and monomeric (/j) fot'ms ofperylene crystals. Two-center type self-trapped exciton in a-perylene, and one-center type and two-center type self-trapped excitons in /7-perylene are stableand play prominent roles in exciton radiative decay. T he decaytimes of free andself-trapped exciton luminescence are discussed in ternts of exciton-lattice infer-action. The exciton band width is briefly discussed.
