Absorption and luminescence spectra of phenanthrene have been investigatedunder pressures up to 2.4 GPa, using a diamond anvil cell. Free-exciton luminescencewhich is observable at ambient pressure is replaced by self-trapped-excitonluminescence at pressures higher than 1.8 GPa. From this fact it is suggested that theexciton-phonon coupling constant g increases with increasing pressure. The self-trapdepth at high pressures is estimated to be : 350 cm '. The molecular conformationof self-trapped excitons under pressure is briefly discussed,In conjunction with optical spectra under pressure, spectra at ambient pressure arealso discussed. The luminescence originates from the lowest singlet states 'A. and 'B.at room temperature but at low temperatures luminescence originates from a statewhich is located below the 'B. state.phenanthrene, exciton-phonon interaction, pressure, absorption, luminescence
