Flaky crystals of /17-dichloroanthracene are grown by sublimation method. Polar-ized absorption and luminescence spectra have been examined over the temperaturerange from 300 K to 6 K. The lowest singlet exciton absorption band is confirmed tobe located at 23370 f 20 cm ' at 6.5 K. The exciton-phonon coupling strength is esti-mated to be 1.66. Vibronic luminescence bands have been observed at temperaturesbelow 37 K and above 180 K and are assigned as due to radiative annihilation of freeexcitons. Adiabatic potential energy curves are proposed to explain thoseluminescence spectra and the parameters are obtained as follows: The self-trapdepth= -1400'l-200cm '. The half-width of the free exciton band=2l00;300cm ' . The self-trapping barrier height = 75 f 5 cm ' . Possibility of the presence of twokinds of self-trapped exciton states is briefly discussed.[exciton, p-9, 10-dich[oroanthracene, crystal growth, exciton-phonon coupling, ]l absorption, luminescencel
